Week-long Yoga Retreats in Granada Province
A "Yoga Retreat" is simply a holiday with the practice of Yoga as the central piece. The aim of our retreats is to introduce the energising revitalisation that Yoga can give you. Three experienced Spanish and British teachers will guide you in a programme of dynamic Hatha and Raja Yoga, Pranayama (channeling of energies through breathing), gentle meditation, and discussion workshops. Held on the premises of a delightful converted mill, amid tranquil surroundings in rural Andalucia, our all-inclusive Yoga Retreats are run on four dates in June 2009 (see below), of either four or six full days, for groups of no more than fourteen people. Meals and accomodation are included in the package prices (see below); also available are optional excursions and holistic treatments.

Course Schedule & Optional Activities
There are two Yoga classes each day, the morning "Dynamic Yoga" class, practising various asanas to infuse you with energy and well-being throughout the day, and then in the evening a less energetic class which also includes tuition of the breathing techniques known as Pranayama. There is also a half-hour meditation session each day, led by the tutor, and aimed at helping you put your Yoga learning into focus. A sample day on the Retreat would be:
08:00 One and a half hour Dynamic Yoga class
10:00 Breakfast and free time
12:30 Workshop - to discuss varying topics about Yoga and its philiosophy
13:30 Lunch* and free time
18:30 One and a half hour Pranayama and Yoga class
20:00 Meditation
20:30 Dinner* and free time
23:30 Lights out
*All meals are vegetarian and made with fresh local ingredients, if you have any dietary intolerances, please let us know when you book.
On each day there is plenty of time for relaxation, either around the cortijo's pool and gardens, or in the surrounding countryside. You can explore the local area either on foot (we'll give you suggestions for some lovely walks) or by renting a bicycle. There will also be a Free Day on each Retreat, with the chance to take a dip in the Mediterranean - there is a return transfer to the beach at Salobreña (included in the package) - or to simply do your own thing. Available at the cortijo, at additional cost, are a range of holistic treatments: reiki, Thai and Ayurvedic massage, acupuncture and chiromassage. Prior booking is necessary.
The Alhambra palaces and gardens - the jewel in Granada's crown, and not to be missed - can be visited during the Retreat as an optional excursion one afternoon, or alternatively either before or afterwards (please indicate at the time of booking if you would like to do this, as tickets need to be reserved well in advance).

The Instructors
Tony...originally discovered his discipline in the south of India, in a Sivananda ashram in Kerala. He carried on his practice with various masters across Europe and, now in his seveth year as a Yoga teacher, he is currently following a British Wheel of Yoga integration course in Oxford, as well as giving classes in Spain and the UK.
Beatriz...lives in a small village in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada and has been teaching Yoga for some six years. Trained in various forms of Yoga at centres throughout India, Beatriz is also a graduate of The British School of Yoga in Devon, and The Yoga Hut Tapovan in Rishikesh, India. She now gives classes in Granada and Madrid and has a growing following of students, both locals and foreign residents, adults and children.
Maria...has been teaching Yoga for over eight years. She blends her love and knowledge of Sivananda, Ashtanga and Yin Yoga traditions to ensure that each session feels like a new and exciting journey of self-discovery. Students find her classes authentic and nurturing as Maria
has a warm, friendly and gently encouraging approach to teaching. Her classes encompass all the traditional techniques of Yoga, such as asanas and relaxation, chanting, breath control, positive thinking and meditation. Maria is enthusiastic and inspiring - she knows that Yoga can help YOU !
The teachers may vary - we will inform you which teachers will be present at your Retreat during the booking process. |
Course venue
We have carefully chosen accommodation that we feel really complements the Yoga experience, making for a truly relaxing break "away from it all". For these Retreats we will have the exclusive use of an old converted cortijo, originally a flour mill dating from Moorish times. Located only 20 minutes from the city of Granada, the farmhouse enjoys a quiet, peaceful location with views across the 'Laguna de El Padul', a protected swamp-marsh area which forms part of the Sierra Nevada Natural Park, the high peaks of which can be seen from the grounds.
The building itself conserves some of the original features and materials such as the Arab ceramics, roof tiles, limewashed stone walls, and terracotta floor tiles. The extensive grounds have many different species of fruit trees, such as walnut, fig, quince, pear and cherry, providing lots of shady nooks and crannies. You will enjoy use of a 6x3 metres swimming-pool, and a small river crosses the site leading to a small lake, so there is always a feeling of freshness and cool, even on the hottest summer's day. All around there is Andalusian garden vegetation, with geraniums and other flowers and plants all adding to the relaxing and tranquil nature of the place.
Accommodation is in various double/twin room apartments in the cortijo, each of which has access to :
- Bathrooms with shower
- Small living-room / fully-equipped kitchen
- Terraces with garden furniture
- Washing machine
- Air conditioning*
- All bedding and towels are provided
*The ambient temperature within the apartments is constantly maintained at optimum levels due to the microclimate created by the traditional construction methods. The same is true of the external areas of the cortijo, with many areas surrounded by water and vegetation.
