The radiant, sharp light of southern Spain is a draw for so many visitors, especially photographers, yet capturing its sometimes elusive qualities on camera can be a frustrating endeavour. Granada and its surrounding countryside offer a wealth of imagery, too - so that it can be difficult to know how to do it all justice. Photographs are such a key element of our travel memories, hence we have designed these practical and inspirational “safaris” and workshops to help you compile a portfolio that truly reflects the beauty you see while you are here. Led by David Aspinall, an experienced professional photographer and teacher of graphic design, they are aimed at the accomplished photographer and enthusiastic beginner alike, using both digital and print. The Granada Photo Safari is David’s very personal view of Granada, uncovering some of the less prominent aspects of this intriguing city. The Lecrín Photo Safari, based in the countryside to the south of Granada, focuses on small, sleepy white villages amid a timeless landscape of olives, almonds and pines. The Digital Darkroom Workshop introduces the tricks and techniques of digital enhancement of images and is the ideal complement to either safari or an absorbing activity on its own.
Granada Photo Safari
Gain a very personal view of Granada on this photographic “safari” through one of the city’s most characterful neighborhoods. David Aspinall has been photographing the city over many years and shares with you not just his love and knowledge for Granada but also techniques for getting the best results from your camera, whether film or digital. You will learn tips and advice on such matters as photo composition, light, angles, focus, how to get great portraits – in short, what makes for a striking photo.
Lecrín Photo Safari
The unspoilt Lecrín Valley, to the south of Granada, is the beautiful setting for this exploration of the arts of photography. David Aspinall, professional photographer and teacher of graphic design in England, moved here some five years ago and introduces his village and the surrounding countryside on a leisurely walk which puts before your lens some wonderful subject matter. The valley is sub-tropical in places, allowing for the cultivation of many fruits, in particular lemons and oranges, and the lush orchards are a delight to the senses.
Digital Darkroom Workshop
The ideal complement to the Lecrín Safari: after a home-made lunch you spend the afternoon in a “digital darkroom” session. Suitable for all levels of prior knowledge, this is a three hour exploration of the process of turning pixels into print. Working on the portfolio you have either assembled on the safari or on other travels, you will learn techniques for the digital manipulation of images, conversion to black & white, cropping, colour enhancement, creative twists and preparation for print or the web, and so on. Together with the Lecrín Safari this forms the perfect introduction to practical digital photography, in a beautiful and still traditional part of rural Andalucía.

| "In a short period of time we learnt so much about photography, our cameras (!) and the beautiful city of Granada. Both of us have come away really thinking about the composition of our photos and are really keen to practise our new skills immediately!" Kathryn Mitchell, Reading, UK |
