 How to get to Granada

Granada is easy to reach by air, road and train.

There are direct scheduled flights into Granada Airport from several UK airports (as well as Paris, Frankfurt, Rome and Milan), making for a quick and comfortable journey. However, do consider all options, such as flying to either Málaga Airport (135 kms from Granada) or Almería Airport (175 kms) and then travelling on to Granada by taxi and bus, details of which appear below.

Flights to and from Spain are not included in our prices, allowing you to choose from the many alternatives and to be flexible with your dates.

AIR

Depending on the season and when you book, a return flight to Spain can cost as little as 50€. It is a good idea to periodically check the special offers promoted on the airlines' websites and on specialist websites such as Cheapflights. In addition, we are always happy to give advice as to the many options available and how to secure the best bargains!

Granada Airport has direct international flights operated by the following carriers:

  • Ryanair: Departures from London Stansted, East Midlands and Liverpool; Frankfurt (Hahn) and Milan (Bergamo)
  • Vueling: Departures from Paris (CDG) and Roma (Fiumicino)

There are also flights to Granada from Madrid and Barcelona with Iberia, Spanair and Vueling, and with Ryanair from Girona, allowing for many connections to airports worldwide.

Málaga Airport is southern Spain’s main international airport, with flights from all over Europe. Granada is only an hour and a half’s car drive away or a little over two and a half hours by taxi and bus.

Almería Airport, destination for an increasing number of scheduled flights from around Europe, is another option. Travel time to Granada is two hours by car, approximately three hours by taxi and bus.

IMPORTANT: When making your flight arrangements, please bear in mind the time you will need to allow to get from your arrival airport to Granada in good time before any activity that begins that same day. We don’t want you to miss anything! NB If you fly into Málaga or Almería airports we strongly recommend either that you choose a flight which arrives mid-afternoon or that you request an Airport Transfer. This is because there are fewer bus services from those cities to Granada in the evening.

CAR

The network of motorways and main roads in Andalucía is pretty good, having seen heavy investment over the last two decades. Finding your way around city centres, however, especially historic places such as Granada, is only for those of a strong nervous disposition. If you hire a car then it is advisable to use it only to get from A to B - once at your destination return it and use local transportation and taxis within the city. Rental cars can be picked up at airports, train stations and downtown locations in all the main cities. Contact Us for details and prices.

TRAIN

Perhaps not Granada’s strongest card, although the high-speed AVE train from Madrid is due to be extended to Granada within the next few years. Quite when, though, no-one yet knows... The train journey from Málaga to Granada involves a change at Bobadilla, a small countryside station, and is therefore a rather slow option (as long as 4 hours 30 minutes). From Almería the journey takes just 2 hours 15 minutes, but there are only 3-4 trains per day (13,85€ adult single).

The recent introduction of an ALTARIA service via Córdoba makes the Madrid-Granada route somewhat shorter than before, this journey now taking 4 hours 35 minutes. There are currently 3 trains a day (59,80€ adult single).

For timetables and further details, consult the national railways website, Renfe.
